Most Underrated/Overlooked Freshman Opportunities?

I'm currently a freshman at a semi-target school, and was wondering if you guys had any recommendations outside of school on setting yourself apart.

The most common ones I've heard from are these:

My main concern is that many freshmen entering the process already have this. I'm also recruiting for PE with IB, so my focus is really on building an elite resume that would get me to the interview round.

I also have relevant IB/VC experience and am going to work for a Fortune 500 as well as a Top 10 Bank in Asia over the summer. My GPA will be above 3.9 going into the process. I have started networking with analysts from top BB/EB/PE firms and plan on doing so until recruitment comes around.

If you have any recommendations, I'd be more than glad to hear them. Thanks again guys 🙏

To stand out as a freshman at a semi-target school, especially with your impressive GPA and prior experience, here are some underrated and overlooked opportunities based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Freshman/Sophomore Accelerator Programs: Many banks and firms offer early insight or diversity programs specifically for underclassmen. These programs are excellent for networking, gaining exposure, and getting on recruiters' radars early.

  2. Alumni Mentorship Programs: Leverage your school's alumni network to find mentors in IB, PE, or VC. Alumni are often more willing to help students from their alma mater, and these relationships can lead to referrals or valuable advice.

  3. Niche Finance Clubs or Competitions: Beyond general finance clubs, look for niche opportunities like investment funds, case competitions, or stock pitch contests. These can demonstrate your initiative and technical skills.

  4. Volunteering in Relevant Organizations: Volunteering for finance-related organizations or events (e.g., CFA societies, local business expos) can help you build connections and show your commitment to the industry.

  5. Cold Outreach to Industry Professionals: Continue networking, but also consider reaching out to professionals in less traditional roles or firms (e.g., boutique PE/VC, family offices). These connections can provide unique insights and opportunities.

  6. Skill Development: Use your freshman year to master technical skills like financial modeling, Excel, and PowerPoint. Completing certifications or online courses (e.g., WSO financial modeling courses) can give you an edge.

  7. Research Assistant Roles: Collaborate with professors on finance or economics research. This can add a unique academic angle to your resume and demonstrate analytical rigor.

  8. Entrepreneurial Ventures: Starting a small business, side hustle, or even a finance-related blog can showcase your initiative, creativity, and leadership.

  9. Industry-Specific Knowledge: Deepen your understanding of specific industries (e.g., tech, healthcare) that align with your PE/IB goals. This can make you stand out during interviews.

  10. Attending Speaker Events and Conferences: Many schools and organizations host industry leaders for talks or panels. Attending these events can help you learn and network simultaneously.

By combining these strategies with your existing experience and networking efforts, you'll be well-positioned to build an elite resume and secure interviews at top firms. Keep pushing forward!

I do projects and deal interaction w an LMM IB and deal interaction with a VC. I've also gotten an update and will likely only be able to do the F500 or T10 bank. If there's any other things that you recommend I look into to help me stand out I'd greatly appreciate it 🙏
