Most Unethical Business Practices You Have Witnessed?

I am currently embroiled in some issues with a former employer who is dragging my name through the mud by sending emails to all the key stakeholders with whom we work. For example, he forged my signature on a non-compete and business conduct agreement I never signed and never saw. I have hired counsel and now have to deal with this on top of my new job.

Semi-related... Received an email from a senior executive (think "Head of") requesting a complete export of our CRM, which included information on thousands of companies we were courting/evaluating for investment.  At face value, this was not an overly uncommon request, as this person would have had use for this information for segmentation/pipeline purposes, but they had asked me to 1. include notes on last touchpoint and 2. print it.  I mentioned this would be several hundred pages of printing and hard copy would be basically useless for any potential analysis that the person would be interested in.  "No I understand, just want it this way".  I tell my MD in the context of "Can you believe how stupid this request is?", not at all putting together what was actually going on.  It gets run up the flag pole and the next day I'm in a meeting with the CEO, COO, GC, outside counsel, etc.  The true intent was uncovered, the person was immediately fired, and I earned my inadvertent whistleblower badge.

I was thinking about #1 while I was reading through some docs. is it really illegal honestly to have an understanding of a business and then start your own?? genuinely curious
