Moving from MM to MF

Hi everyone,

Currently an ASO 1 at a MM PE fund. The fund is not doing well and fundraising looks grim. Have started to consider trying to lateral to a MF. I am in search of 1) learning by being acquisitive, 2) dealing with larger investments and mandates, and 3) comp

Has anyone who has made a similar move from MM to MFPE and willing to share their experience and if they are glad / regretted it? I understand that I will likely start over as an ASO 1 (this is fine) and that I will get cranked (I already am).

Would love opinions on if 1) after first year is an optimal time to lateral, 2) how MFs treat lateralled ASOs (will I get the same deal opps?), and 3) anything else I should be thinking about that I am missing. Thank you

Have definitely seen this happen in 2021, but lateral associate market is brutal rn from all I gather. Curious to hear others’ takes if different

Have seen a few MM=>MF moves at the Principal level though more recently

MM is a broad range but assuming its a reputable MM shop its been definitely done in past, but especially an uphill battle given market

This is like wanting to lateral from your neighborhood pickup league to the NBA but worrying that you won’t get enough playtime
