Negotiating start date as lateral hire?

Hey guys - I'm currently wrapping up my second year as a PE associate and lateraling to a similar fund. Obviously, I want as much time off between jobs as possible and the new firm wants me to start ASAP. I negotiated a start date in the third week of September basically saying my current program ends on 9/1, I want to leave in good standing and have 3 weeks off. They were cool with this. A few weeks later, I told my current firm about my plans after the program; they were supportive because I'm finishing out the program / leaving in good standing and actually agreed to let me leave in mid July (1.5 months before original end date) to get more time off while pro-rating my bonus. So now I'll have 2 months + 1 week off between jobs, which is obviously great from a travel / life experiences POV. My only question is do I have an obligation to tell the new firm I'm quitting my current firm early? Any world in which this gets back to them and bites me, or would they not care?

No, they will not care and will probably not even remember what you said your end date was. Even if they were, negotiating an exit with current firm is no problem and has nothing to do with them.

Enjoy your time off and no need to hide it when you start there. If they needed someone truly ASAP they wouldn't have hired you so far out.
