Networking as a IB analyst to get interviews at top MM PE firms?????

Sup Gringos,

I have a question that maybe someone on the buyside or someone who has gone through the PE recruiting process can help me on.

I am currently a 1st year analyst at a top EB/MM in NYC. I have had good deal experience so far on financings and buy-side M&A deals. Went to a semi-target that has decent placement but not much of a presence at PE shops.

My question is really whether the networking process that I used with getting into an investment banking firm can be used in a similar manner with MM PE recruiting. For example, would it help my chances to be actively networking with associates, VP's at top MM PE firms and develop a relationship with them over this next year?

Really my question boils down is how much this networking can translate into actual interviews at these PE firms the way it did at the banks? I was good at the networking process for banking and would like to take a similar approach again (obviously combined with talking with HH as well as other avenues).

Feel like this could open me up to some opportunities that HH would not show me at first. What are people's thoughts? Any experience with this?
