Niche PE firm or more reputable shop?

Looking for some advice on how to proceed:

I’m currently working in NY at an MBB consulting firm and have an offer to join a very niche PE firm (~1-2B AUM, focused exclusively on a segment of the consumer market). It’s a niche that really excites me and that I’d be interested in working in, so the offer is very compelling.

My concern is that I would like to go to a top grad school in the next 2-3 years and don’t want to compromise my chances.

Would taking this offer hinder my bschool chances? Should I push for a traditional PE role that I am less passionate about instead?

My advice is to not spite yourself in favor of a plan. In two years you may not have any desire to go to business school. Further, it's my understanding that it's easier to get into PE post-MBA if you have pre-MBA experience.

If you're passionate about the niche, do it. If you still want to get an MBA, make sure your numbers are great and your passion should shine in the interview.

Just my two cents, but I think you should take the chance and follow your passion.
