No work exp in IB/PE - Can I still break into PE at the graduate level?

I am a final year undergraduate from a target school (Oxford) and recently completed an internship in consulting (MBB). Before this I have only done management consulting internships at a Big 4 firm. Was wondering if I could still pivot to PE at the graduate level - i.e. graduate-level jobs? How hard would this be and what should I do to prepare?

Absolutely, you can still break into PE at the graduate level. It might be a bit challenging, but it's definitely not impossible. Here's what you can do:

  1. Leverage your consulting experience: PE firms value the analytical and problem-solving skills that you've honed in consulting. You can use this to your advantage when applying for PE roles.

  2. Network: Networking is key in the finance industry. Reach out to alumni from your school who are currently working in PE. They can provide valuable insights and potentially refer you for positions.

  3. Gain financial knowledge: PE is a lot about financial analysis and modeling. If you haven't already, consider taking courses on financial modeling and valuation. WSO Academy offers a range of courses that can help you with this.

  4. Apply to smaller PE firms: Smaller and middle-market PE firms are often more open to hiring candidates with non-traditional backgrounds.

  5. Prepare for interviews: PE interviews focus on both fit and technicals. You should be able to analyze an industry, do a modeling exercise live, and articulate about transactions you've worked on.

Remember, the most important thing is to show that you can deliver value to the PE firm. Good luck!
