Non-modeling heavy IBD to MF PE?
Has anyone done that, and is that something that's actually achievable? I only know one guy at Apollo --- he got in straight from undergrad, so naturally people didn't expect a senior college student to be fully prepared in terms of modeling.
I'm in coverage, and my team is the kind that doesn't do modeling in house, or rarely.
Does that mean my chance into an UMM or MF is fucked? What can I do?
Last note, it's not very feasible for me to ask for modeling projects from my execution group that does the modeling. What I can do is build my own models using what I learned from Rosenbaum & Pearl on deals that I'm on (models won't be too complicated). That is something I do.

So what do you do on a deal versus product group? Can you walk through your responsibilities vs product group’s on a pitch, live m&a deal, etc?
My group does all the pitch and covers a wide range of industries. This is somewhat unusual as my coverage group covers a whole geographic area (not LatAm). We would conduct a lot of due diligence work together with lawyers, and even go on-site to conduct company DD work. Then we would write up the prospectus for clients. Modeling is a small part of the whole process, and it's usually done by my execution co-workers, instead of done within the coverage team.

You’ll be fine if you’re able to communicate how to build the company’s operating model. PE is about diligence and you’ll get good reps going doing due diligence on comapnies
Just study your technicals and practice LBO modeling from scratch.
The real question would be how you perform once you start. It’s hard to tell during interviews but very easy to tell whether someone had a rigorous banking experience or not. Everyone that you work with will be extremely frustrated and disappointed with you when you first start. Put your head down and grind out the first 3-4 months to ramp up to your peers levels and meet expectations. That’s the reality.
