Non-Target to UMM PE or MF PE

Rising senior that just finished their junior summer in the top group at a mid-level BB think Citi/Barclays/BofA. I don’t go to an Ivy or a T20, or a very notable school in anyway. Am I cooked for on cycle or should I still have a shot at some good shops since I’m in a top group?

You’re not cooked at all! Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation is actually quite promising. Here’s why:

  1. Top Group at a Mid-Level BB: Being in a top group at a bank like Citi, Barclays, or BofA is a strong starting point. These banks have solid reputations, and their top groups often have good placement into UMM PE or even MF PE. Your deal experience and technical skills will matter more than the name of your school at this stage.

  2. Non-Target Background: While coming from a non-target can present challenges, it’s not a dealbreaker. Many non-target candidates have successfully transitioned to UMM or MF PE by leveraging their work experience, networking aggressively, and excelling in interviews. Your performance at the BB will speak volumes.

  3. On-Cycle Recruiting: On-cycle recruiting is highly competitive, but your position in a top group gives you a shot. Focus on preparing for the process by:

    • Networking: Reach out to alumni or professionals in PE firms, even if they’re not from your school. Many non-target candidates have succeeded by building relationships outside their immediate alumni network.
    • Technical Prep: Be ready to crush the technical interviews. PE firms will test your modeling skills, deal knowledge, and ability to think critically about investments.
    • Storytelling: Craft a compelling narrative about your background, emphasizing your achievements at the BB and how they’ve prepared you for PE.
  4. Targeting the Right Firms: While MF PE might be a stretch due to the non-target background, UMM PE is definitely within reach. Focus on firms that value strong deal experience and technical skills over pedigree.

  5. Confidence is Key: Avoid the “woe is me” mindset. As highlighted in WSO threads, confidence and a proactive approach are critical. Don’t let your school define your chances—your performance and preparation will.

In summary, you absolutely have a shot at good shops. Double down on preparation, leverage your top group experience, and network strategically. Many have walked this path successfully, and you can too!
