On-cycle PE Networking
For someone who will be starting at a less heralded coverage group at a good bank (pretty good GPA and school), how much of an effect can networking have during on cycle PE recruiting?

A decent amount. If an Analyst reaches out to me and we have a good conversation + their resume looks up to par, I'll pass their name along to our hiring team. Doesn't mean it'll guarantee an interview, but it certainly helps. Plus it helps you form a better impression of the funds you might / might not want to work at. I would recommend it.
Do you recommend doing this for mega funds or smaller funds only?
Super glad to hear this is the case. Never seen this at my MF but given the recruiting cycle timeline I would be shocked if this wasn't a thing at most other shops
I had two conversations networking with my school's alums (with post-MBA level folks) who directly got me an interview because of the conversation.
E.g., there was no intermediate step - they had the ability to guarantee the extension of an interview
