Oncycle Resume With No Prior IB Experience

In a bit of a weird situation. I interned at a top CRE brokerage team over the summer but ended up recruiting full time into REIB. I love real estate so I definitely want to stay in the space and because of that I’ve been looking at MF REPE recruiting. A couple of firms recruit on cycle and I want to make sure that my resume is all good and up to date for recruiting.

I’ve seen a number of resume formats that highlight transaction experience but I’m not sure what I should do with my resume. I worked on a number of large and high profile live deals as an intern but these were all on the brokerage side of things. Given my focus on REPE should I include these deals on my resume or just omit this section entirely. Of course once I get experience in my full time role I’ll add those but asking in case recruiting picks up in the summer.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, you should absolutely include your transaction experience from your CRE brokerage internship on your resume. Highlighting large and high-profile live deals demonstrates your exposure to the real estate market, your ability to work on complex transactions, and your understanding of deal processes—all of which are valuable in REPE recruiting.

Here’s how to approach it: 1. Focus on Transferable Skills: Emphasize skills like financial modeling, market analysis, client interaction, and deal execution. These are directly relevant to REPE roles. 2. Quantify Your Impact: Include metrics such as deal size, number of transactions, or notable clients to make your experience stand out. 3. Tailor Your Resume: Frame your brokerage experience in a way that aligns with REPE. For example, instead of just stating "brokered deals," you could say "supported underwriting and transaction management for $X billion in commercial real estate assets."

Once you gain experience in your REIB full-time role, you can update your resume to reflect that. However, for now, showcasing your brokerage experience is a strong way to demonstrate your real estate expertise and deal exposure.
