Path to the Megafund 🏙
I'm an incoming full time IB analyst at a LMM bank. What is the ideal path to make it to a PE megafund? My plan right now is to do approx 4 years in banking (and work upstream), maybe one in consulting (top-tier firm like McKinsey), and then go get my MBA at Wharton / Harvard. Any critiques?
1 year at your current bankÂ
2 years at a BB/EBÂ
Then MFÂ
Def don't need to work for MBB too or get MBA, Most MFs also don't hire many ppl post biz school, just ask the stars backÂ
If you’re set on MF, easiest way would probably be to lateral to a top group as an analyst and recruit on-cycle.
Some MFs are doable from consulting, but it’s harder than from good bank.Â
Â
It’s almost definitely not going be doable post MBA, so I wouldn’t view that as a step on the path to MF.
Agree with the above, lateral to BB/EB at one year mark, do a third year so you can do oncycle, and hope you land MF. If not, aim for MM/UMM and try to move upstream once you're already in PE. Hopefully you have an excellent GPA and undergrad school, if you have like a 3.0 from a non target MFs are not going to interview you even from BB/EB.Â
You cannot really go into PE post-MBA without having done it pre-MBA, so can drop that idea.Â
For your reference, I have a 3.8 and go to a semi target
