PE back to Banking
All,
I am currently struggling over a career decision I have to make. Briefly on background: I did 2 years ibd at a BB and left for a small/lower mm PE firm (been here 1 year). Turns out i do not like it at my current shop, mainly because of co-workers and the fact that we do not do any deals. I am still eyeing PE as a long-term career but am now wondering whether it makes sense to go back to banking (have an offer with a BB on the table) and probably jump in 1-2 years as a 2nd year associate or whether it makes more sense to stick it out and transition to a different pe. This is Europe.
Any thougts?
In Europe people go back to IB but then they stay there. It would not be very logical to go back to IB to do again PE, in the future it might harm your recruiting effort. I think it would be better to wait some more time at your current shop and then lateral to a better PE firm
ok, thanks. haven't really seen any exampls of ppl going back to banking from PE at all to be honest. But as you pointed out, spinning the story and giving a credible explanation for jumping sell/buy side roles is dfficult However, how do you think about interviewing with PE funds and having a BB background vs interviewing and having a small/midcap pe job. imo a bb analyst/associate background should place me stronger than a no name pe shop
The name is important of course, but making back and forth will hurt your chances. I would try to lateral to a better PE fund
have you had any experiences/insides into the process? Could imagine that it is quite difficult, given the fact that most PE firms hire +2y BB analysts Guess the best approach might be to contact funds directly, instead of going via headhunters who might prefer anlysts from the BBs which should be easier to place.
Would it be worthwhile to reach out to the large cap funds as well?
