PE case interview - prep advice

Hi everyone!

I'll have an interview for a PE analyst role at the development bank that is focusing on PE and VC in emerging market. There will be an offline recruitment day with all rounds of interviews happening on the same. On top of fit interviews, there should be a 45-min case study.

Do you have any recommendation on what technical topics should I review for the case study and what kind of cases are usually used at PE interviews

Hey there, future PE superstar!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you can expect and how you can prepare for your PE case study:

  1. Understanding the Case Study: In most interviews, you'll be asked to walk through a case study. This usually involves a Confidential Information Memorandum (CIM) from an old sell-side process. You'll need to condense the important parts of the CIM, analyze the pros and cons of the business, and include a SWOT analysis.

  2. Factors to Consider: You're trying to determine whether the target company is a good candidate for a leveraged buyout. Here are some factors you should consider:

    • Historical and Projected Growth and Profitability: Ensure the company can handle the additional debt from an LBO while providing a strong return on investment through growth in revenue and profitability.
    • Diversity of Customers & Products: Make sure the company isn't overly concentrated in one product area or with one customer. If there is notable concentration, it should prove that it has sticky customer relationships.
    • Differentiating Factors of The Business: What makes the business stand out?
  3. Types of Questions: You can expect these types of questions during your private equity interviews: Fit Questions, Case Study, Deal Experience, LBO Modeling, Technical Questions, Behavioral Questions. Be ready to put in the hours to prepare for every one of these types of questions.

  4. Resources: WSO offers a Private Equity Interview Prep Pack and Financial Modeling Training for self-study. These resources can help you prepare effectively for your interview.

Remember, confidence, clarity, and relevance are key. Good luck, and knock 'em dead!
