PE Exit to Portfolio Company?

  • How likely is it for PE associates to exit to a portfolio company and lead corporate functions (FP&A, Corp Dev, Corp Strat etc.)?
  • How often do they receive equity in the portfolio company after 2-3 years as a PE associate?
  • Wouldn't that be a more attractive path where you work as an associate for 2 years, join a portfolio company and receive equity, then get millions when the company is sold?
  • If no equity, does coming from the PE help your progression in portfolio company?

Heard stories of 20-somethings earning $5mn+ going down this path when company is sold but curious if this actually happens in real life.
