Breaking into PE

Hi all,

I'll be starting at an MBB soon, but in the meantime have a lot of free time. I'm 99%pretty confident that I want to work in PE after a year or so, and thought it would be good to get some experience to confirm that I enjoy the work and it's a good fit.

I've applied to a few places but haven't got past the CV screening stage so far. Any advice on breaking into the industry- should I broaden my search to other investment type roles as well? Also would anyone in the industry be willing to give me some pointers for my CV (since that seems to be the issue)?

TIA!

When are you starting? You're trying to get to PE beforehand... are you applying for internships?

Not surprising you're not getting past the interview stage since you seemingly have no full time work experience, and if you're applying for summer 2022 internships you're a year and a half late. Those postings might be stale.

MBB to PE is a well trodden path but you can't get there without the MBB experience (ideally 2 years, 1 year -> PE is kind of rare). You should be prepared for on-cycle (look it up on here) and will need to learn modeling since that is less emphasized in consulting.

You can post your CV on here as a heavily redacted PDF, but I think the issue is more you're applying with the wrong timing, no experience, and with an accepted job offer.

Yes, sorry my original post wasn't super clear. I've been applying for off-cycle internships- I start at MBB in just under a year from now. I have a few previous internships (incl. MBB).

I've been looking up how to build DCF models (youtube), and now understand the principles- I'd say I could build a decent model with a little guidance.

I'm not comfortable to share my CV on here, even redacted, because there's no way to make it valuable without it being identifiable. Are you happy for me to PM you?
