PE Portco Analyst

Ignore title. Incoming IB analyst. Got asked to interview at a really tiny MM pe portco which has a decent amount of committed capital to do IT services roll-ups in the 1-10mm ebitda range. if i join now i can get rsus and a pretty fast path to vp (5 years) but this is just an M&A corp dev kinda role. base + bonus is lower than ib (100+35, NY/SF) is it worth considering over a banking offer I have? i think not but would love any insight.

I would pass - maybe worth considering after an IB/PE stint, but this doesn't make much sense to turn down IB for.

Exits from this type of role are slim with no IB experience to fall back on, and learning/development is always questionable at these smaller companies. These roles are not difficult to get, especially at LMM portcos - I'd at least get the IB stint on your resume before considering something like this

appreciate the input man. definitely think there's merit to what you're saying. the mm pe shop funding these guys has incredible returns and that is my only hesitation. although i absolutely do not want to be boxed into M&A as someone who just works with lmm IT services companies. and it's a little questionable that they would give away sizeable RSUs to someone out of undergrad. great point about the exits, didn't really consider that. thanks.

lol why do the sponsor’s returns matter here? don’t let them force kool aid down ur throat, ur not gonna 20x your RSUs by year’s end

I would pass unless you really don’t like IB. Three observations:

-people who go do corp dev for PE get stuck there (I use “stuck” loosely because it can be a great gig and better WLB), so don’t go unless you want to stay in that role (laterally up to PE will be hard)

-That comp seems below market for SF or NYC

-my observations on the industry: IT services as an industry is very 4-5 years ago (tons of platforms have consolidated the industry, some have crushed it but multiples are definitely up, might be hard as a newer platform)

super helpful, thanks for the insight. will almost definitely pass on this one. out of curiosity though, would you know which IT services platforms did really well over the last few years?
