My background: two years IB, eight years corp dev/corp fin at multiple F500s and two PE PortCos. My first PE PortCo role was with a MF PortCo. The MF had a small cap that acquired a business with no FP&A group, and I helped build it out. Second PE PortCo role was in corp dev at a MM PE PortCo. The role ended up growing to encompass corp dev, corp fin, any and all ad hoc cash management projects, and even some PMO work.

Your best bet is going to search "private equity" on Indeed.com. Most of these PortCo roles will list private equity experience as a plus, hence why the search term "private equity" will return PortCo roles. Plenty of these roles are fully remote, especially post-COVID. You can type in "remote" in the location search box if remote work is what you want. Amity Search Partners, Oxbridge Group, and CarterPierce are all search firms that have reached out to me for PortCo roles. I believe you can submit your resume to them online to be added to their data base. That alone has gotten me several interviews. Another tactic that you might take is to just pour through LinkedIn job postings for anything "private equity". Look at the job poster and see if they work for a search firm. Other search firms that I have noticed roles posted from, but have never interacted with are Korn Ferry, Kforce, StevenDouglas, Spencer Stuart, Evolve Partners, and The Harrison-Rush Group.

One other career path that you might be interested in are these firms that offer outsourced CFO and private equity improvement (PEI) services. Alvarez and Marsal, BRG, AlixPartners, FTI Consulting, Accordion Partners, and all of the Big Four are examples of these firms. Imagine PE PortCo finance, but on a project basis and higher pay. Negative are worse hours.

Hope that helps. Happy to answer any more questions.

Why do you want to work for a portco? Honestly, there are a lot of downsides to these roles.

Unless you can get a chunk of equity, it's not worth it. And if you're applying through indeed.com, I'm guessing that you're not close enough to management to get a piece of it.

Here are some other interesting questions:

What are the downsides to these roles?

How much do they typically pay in comparison to other corporates?

How much equity could you expect from an entry level position?

But to answer you're first question on an anonymous forum....I have 357 years of experience working at a PE portco. How many do you have?
