PE Recruiting Strategy / What to do

Hi all-
This site helped me tremendously during the entire IB recruiting process, so I am turning for insight on what to do for PE recruiting. I am an incoming first year to a mid-tier BB in a solid group in NYC from a target school. I'm certain I would like to do PE in LA, but need guidance on what I should do between now and next summer. Given how hectic and nuts on-cycle appeared to be this past year I want to be as prepared and set up for success as possible. Would love guidance on what I should be doing / when I should be doing it / how I should be it doing between now and next August.

Should I be reaching out to firms I am interested at for networking purposes? Should I be attempting to meet with headhunters? If yes to either, is cold emailing the best method? What prep resources do you guys recommend? What should be my timeline with any of this? Aware that there has been threads on prep and timelines in years past but with how this past on-cycle ended up, I would be happy to hear anything you guys have to offer.

Hey there,

First off, congrats on your incoming first year at a mid-tier BB in NYC! That's a great start. Now, let's talk about your PE recruiting strategy.

  1. Networking: It's never too early to start networking. Reach out to firms you're interested in, especially those in LA since that's where you want to be. You can do this through LinkedIn or through any contacts you may have.

  2. Headhunters: Top groups are usually contacted by headhunters, so you might not need to reach out to them directly. However, if you notice any glaring omissions, don't hesitate to reach out.

  3. Preparation: Start prepping for PE interviews as early as possible. February of your 1st year is a good time to start hitting the books and practice LBO modeling. Your best resource is going to be departing 2nd Years who have already been through the process. They can provide you with guidance on questions to expect, give you a mock interview or two, and might even provide you with actual case studies from interviews.

  4. Follow-up: Don't underestimate the power of following up with the people you meet during the recruiting process. This can help you stand out and show your interest in the role.

  5. Interviews: Remember, PE interviews are not like IB interviews. They are not meant to be formulaic. Most PE shops are small, lean organizations that can be incredibly selective with who they hire. So, show your personality and take some risks in your interviews.

  6. Timeline: Generally, keep your head down for at least the first few months on the job to build a strong rapport with your team. Then, start prepping for interviews around February of your 1st year.

Remember, the key to a successful PE recruiting strategy is preparation, networking, and showing your personality during interviews. Good luck!

No change from previous years. The only uncertainty is when things will kick off. The rest is the same, a very cookie cutter process looking for cookie cutter candidates.
