Pre-Med Student Finance Major
Hi guys, I'm an incoming 4th student at a nontarget large public school in California. I'm majoring in Business (Concentration in Finance) while completing a pre-medical course load (I'm considering MD/MBA, but we'll see what happens). I'd like to think I'm a fairly competitive student for medical school (GPA: 3.85), but due to my schedule, the timeline of the MCAT, and the timeline of medical school applications, I don't think I'll be able to apply to medical school until at least 1 year after graduating college, giving me two "gap" years. If the right opportunity presented itself, I'd be willing to take 3 or even 4. I'm involved in the undergraduate investment fund (healthcare group) and know my way around a DCF pretty well, but I don't know too much about technical metrics or other valuation models though. I don't have any real experience outside of this since most of my summers have been consumed with biomedical research, volunteering, or catching up on classes. I'm interning at a small up-and-coming private equity firm near where I live this summer, but in terms of experience, that's really about it. I'm trying to develop more software skills (VBA, Pivot Tables, Some SQL Operations etc.) but it's hard to find time to do so. I'm interested in biopharmaceutical, biotech, pre-clinical trial buy-side finance operations (PE,HF,VC funding for clinical trials, studying preclinical data, assessing the profitability of hypothetical drugs, drug patenting/combination therapies, generics, drug distribution, or other similar matters.) I also am interested in the sell-side of the healthcare sector, but less so. Is there anything I can do to get a good buy-side finance job after graduation? I know I'm kind of late in the process, and I don't have a lot of experience, but I just wanted to ask if there was something I could do to make this more of a possibility. Also, does anyone mind listing some firms I should look at in California (not really particular about SoCal or NorCal)?
Thanks!
