Prepping for PE recruitment

Hey everyone,

I’m currently about to work full-time at an MBB firm and realizing (a bit late) that I may have completely missed the start of PE recruiting. I honestly didn’t realize how early the process kicks off, so I’m trying to figure out where I stand and what I should be doing now.

A few questions I’d really appreciate help with:

  • How does PE recruiting actually work from here?
  • Do I need to proactively register with headhunters, or do they typically reach out to you? If I should be reaching out, which headhunters should I be prioritizing?
  • Is the process for growth equity different from traditional PE recruiting (timing, headhunters, etc.)?
  • When is recruiting expected to kick off (or has it already fully started/wrapped)?
  • Should I be networking with people at funds directly, or is most of the process driven through headhunters?
  • What should I be doing right now to best position myself, given I may be behind?

Would really appreciate any guidance here. Feeling a bit out of the loop and trying to get up to speed quickly.

Thanks so much in advance.

Private equity recruiting can feel overwhelming, especially if you're just realizing how early the process begins. Here's a breakdown based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. How does PE recruiting work from here?

  • PE recruiting typically kicks off very early, often in December for associate roles starting 18 months later. The process is heavily driven by headhunters, who act as gatekeepers for most opportunities.
  • If you're not already on their radar, you should proactively register with headhunters. They may not always reach out to you, especially if you're not in a traditional feeder role (e.g., IB analyst at a top group).

2. Which headhunters should you prioritize?

  • For traditional PE recruiting, top headhunters include:
    • CPI
    • Glocap
    • HSP
    • Ratio Advisors (if you're interested in tech, VC, or growth equity)
  • In London, firms like KEA, Walker Hamill, Blackwood, and PER are prominent.

3. Is the process for growth equity different from traditional PE recruiting?

  • Yes, growth equity recruiting can differ in timing and focus. While traditional PE recruiting often follows a structured, early timeline, growth equity roles may be more ad-hoc and less rigid. Ratio Advisors is a key headhunter for growth equity and VC-focused roles.

4. When is recruiting expected to kick off (or has it already started/wrapped)?

  • Recruiting for top funds often starts in December and can wrap up quickly, with many funds filling 90-100% of their class during this early process. However, there are still opportunities for "fully-baked" candidates with 18 months of deal experience, so you're not entirely out of the game.

5. Should you network with people at funds directly, or is the process driven through headhunters?

  • While headhunters play a central role, networking directly with people at funds can be valuable, especially if you're targeting specific firms or want to stand out. Building relationships with associates or VPs at your target funds can provide insights and potentially lead to opportunities.

6. What should you be doing right now to best position yourself?

  • Register with headhunters: Reach out to the key players mentioned above and ensure your resume is polished and ready.
  • Clarify your goals: Be prepared to articulate whether you're targeting traditional PE, growth equity, or another area. Know the size of the fund, geography, and type of investing you're interested in.
  • Prepare for interviews: Expect to discuss your deal experience (if applicable) and answer questions like paper LBOs or case studies. Even if you're from MBB, technical prep is still important.
  • Network strategically: Start reaching out to alumni or contacts at funds you're interested in. This can help you get on their radar and potentially bypass headhunter bottlenecks.
  • Stay flexible: If you're behind, consider targeting funds that recruit later or have more flexible timelines.

Don't stress too much about being late—many candidates successfully pivot into PE even if they miss the initial wave. Focus on positioning yourself well and leveraging both headhunters and your network effectively. Good luck!

Recruiting has not kicked off yet for Class of 2028, some headhunters have started reaching out but off cycle for Class of 2027 is still happening

Anyone have insights into when oncycle for the Class of 2028 will kick? Do we expect timelines similar to the class above or similar to the Class of 2026 / 2025
