Private Equity Strategies?

I was going through some Private Equity posts and came across a post about the typical day for an Associate that read "Lunch presentation at a hotel from one of the US megafunds currently raising $8bn. I hate the strategy, the lack of decent exits, and the fact that these businesses are highly skilled marketers rather than highly skilled investors. "

Could someone comment on what is meant by marketers? Also what does he mean by the strategy piece, how in depth does a strategy go besides a basic LBO, Growth, etc.? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
