Yes, sounds like heaven on earth. Give me a job there too. I know some insanely hot girls down there. Probably the polar opposite of living in New York though.

Reality check: Is San Diego as strong as "real cities" in regards to PE, no. Is it a superb place to work and live, absolutely.

There are definitely opportunities in SD if you do some research - find a list of firms located here (I live in SD and work in corp. fin.) and contact them. I moved out here right after I graduated and in my experience there were plenty of firms I was contacting (prior to graduation) through phone and email; just networking and making contacts. PM me if you want to talk further.

A Capital IQ search for private equity shops in the San Diego area turned up the following:

Ampersand Ventures Autus Capital, LLC Bunker Hill Capital Cameron Holdings Corporation Castle Creek Capital LLC Charlotte Square Capital Ventures, Investment Arm Energy Capital Partners Forrest, Binkley & Brown Ground Swell Equity Partners JMI Equity Fund Kuranda Capital Main Street AC Inc (OTCPK:MFIT) Pacific Corporate Group, LLC Ranch Capital, LLC Sunstorm Management Timeline Ventures TVC Ventures, LLC

Some of these may be earlier stage/VC, but I assume that this list contains most of the PE shops around San Diego.

Hope that helps.

Energy Capital Partners is one of the most prominent on that list. Think their current fund is around $2B. Invest a lot in energy assets (i.e. power plants, electric transmission assets, etc.) but also energy focused companies. Lots of ex-Goldman guys there. Have offices back east as well (NJ). Seems like a decent shop.

I know a guy that interned at Relational a few years back. Said it was ok, but definitely a little bit of a sleepy environment, and you'd be one of a couple junior guys your age. Also, heard their comp was nothing to get too excited about, though that's offset by pretty nice hours and a chill lifestyle.
