Questions for expert session

Hi WSO members,

What questions would you ask at your first session with an industry expert (e.g. GLG expert call) if you want to learn as much as possible on a selected opportunity and sector (assuming you don't know much about it)?

Thank you!

Anne

Check out Tegus/Stream calls for an idea on how to guide a call. However you should generally just ask your boss as they will be the most helpful in teaching you how to tailor call specific to the fund’s goals.

what works for me is coming up with a list of 5-6 key ideas that you want to learn about with follow-ups. You should have over 30 questions by the end of your list. When asking questions, make them concise and to the point to not confuse the expert. Make sure the questions are also “answerable.”

Start with interviewee’s background so you can self assess what they actually know and when they are so full of shit their eyes are brown
1. Who are the players in the market

2. How are they functionally different and explain why they are different

3. How are they perceived in terms of rank of perceived quality (follow up: how has that changed over time) (note: this is NPS-lite for interviews)

4. What are key purchasing criteria in the market

5. How does each market participant perform against each key purchasing criteria

6. What is spend on solution (and then ask whatever you need to get to market size or TAM if you aren’t also doing commercial with a consultant)

Those are 90% of the game
