The mega funds have more structured processes and their recruiting should be largely done by summer's end (you could have a job in pocket with more than a year left to go in your analyst stint). The more well-known MMs (MDP, for example) have similar timetables. The smaller MMs, on the other hand, tend to have unpredictable timetables driven largely by their recruiting needs.

So basically people are thinking about leaving before they even really get settled in ?

Everyone thinks about leaving after a few months into IB.

I've gotten recruiter calls about random PE openings, but have not gotten any recruiter calls regarding a structured process for summer 2011 yet. Has anyone else?

At the risk of thread-jacking, how (un)common is it to only have a couple of deals with significant involvement from the analyst (i.e., I have one equity, one convertible, and one M&A - my group does its own) announced or in progress by this point? I've had a couple of other deals - high-grade debt and private placements - but I haven't had any significant involvement in them.

FYI, I'm a first year analyst in a coverage group at a BB.

To answer the deal experience question, from what I've seen at my firm it seems RELATIVELY common, but I have to note that I have met analysts who have yet to close a transaction (I'm in an M&A group). The M&A deal is the most important for PE recruiting, so it's good that you have at least one under your belt.

I want to preface this by saying that my information is limited to the experience in my group/firm, but analysts have yet to really begin interviewing and have mostly been in talks with headhunters over the last few months. Recruiting should ramp up soon though, especially as we approach the summer.
