Roast My Resume – Trying to Transition Into IB/PE/Private Credit – Do I Even Stand a Chance?
Hey everyone, I’m looking for honest feedback on my resume as I attempt to make a career pivot into investment banking, private equity, private credit, or other deal-oriented roles. My background is primarily in corporate FP&A and commercial finance, where I’ve had solid exposure to investment analysis, ROI evaluation, financial modeling, and presenting insights to senior leadership.
I’ve built complex models for scenario analysis, evaluated capital allocation strategies, and worked on cross-functional projects that touched on market and performance metrics. I’m currently a CFA Level 1 candidate and am actively trying to skill up in Power BI and further refine my valuation and deal-modeling abilities.
That said, I know the leap into IB/PE is tough, especially coming from a non-traditional path. Based on my current resume:
- What needs to change in terms of structure, content, or tone?
- Am I framing my experience in the most effective way for a deal-oriented transition?
- Are there any glaring gaps or missing elements that would be red flags for hiring managers in IB/PE/Private Credit?
- Realistically, do I stand a chance, or do I need to take an intermediate step?
Any and all feedback (even brutal honesty) is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I think it would be very challenging to pivot directly given the market backdrop, and there are a number of IB analysts looking for similar roles with deal experience. Honestly, it feels like you need an intermediate step that gets you closer to the end goal. For example, if you want to do private credit/lev fin, maybe do corporate banking or S&P Credit Research etc first and then move to lev fin IB. Did you leave your previous role? I would remove the professional summary, CFA level 1 candidate reference, and the entire strengths line.
Thank you for your suggestions! I was recently let go due to a company restructure and have been looking to transition / study for my CFA level 1.
Thats fair - you should have a much broader range too (vs just IB/PE/PC) so definitely apply to everything, cold call and network. The strategy is to not have too big of an employment gap at the analyst level
Thank you for your insight! I have been recieving a lot of opportunities in FP&A, but as I mentioned I am trying to transition out of that. Do you have any suggestions on roles that could help me take that step towards IB/PE/PC? You mentioned Credit Research and Corporate Banking roles, but any others you would recommend? I would love to transition to a deal-sided role.
