Selby Jennings - Horrible PE Recruiter?
I’m at a UMM PE fund and we are looking to increase headcount across sr associate and VP levels. Normally, we have had talent filled in multiple ways but, given we are so incredibly busy and short staffed right now, we are contemplating using recruitment firms that we normally would t consider; one of them being Selby Jennings.
As the staffer on my team, some of the junior people (associate to VP) have stated they have a “horrible” reputation among candidates.
Does anybody disagree or agree with that characterization? If so, why? We don’t want to dilute candidate pool via working through a subpar recruiter.
Horrible everything. They just collect resumes and send them unsolicited to folks they think/know are recruiting. Never a good experience dealing with them when trying to recruit as a naïve fresh grad and have newfound hatred for them whenever my firm turns on recruiting mode and puts up a job posting. They'll send you the resume of candidates who aren't even looking for a new role in some cases. Don't do business with them, save yourself time and your sanity. They are the absolute bottom feeders of the recruiting firm food chain.
Had a negative experience with them years ago and have ignored them ever since. Don’t do it.
I've worked with them on the candidate side (as a mid-level) and enjoyed working with them more than the traditional HH just cause they have less of an attitude around prestige lol
I got my first PE job through them, never had any issues...
Second this. Majority of their HHs are complete shit and a waste of time to talk with over the phone, but every once in a while they will have a solid mandate.
Landed a MM PE associate role through them this year. Still wondering how they even found out about my fund hiring…
They're spammy and never have the exclusive recruiter contract (which means probability of success for you as candidate is low) but they're still a real recruiting form. Just not as professional and as plugged in as the typical recruiters.
Thanks for the feedback. Very consistent with what I heard internally and the impression I got from them when I was recruiting during my banking days.
Your best bet is to try and find mom and pop recruiters willing to go the extra mile.
For that level, I would just use one of the usual on-cycle firms.
Drop the fund name here, I’m sure you’d get lots of LinkedIn DMs from folks trying to get out of their current seats
Agreed
I have been looking up reviews for Selby Jennings as a recruiter because of my recent experience with them. Their Charlotte team is brutal.
I had someone from their team call me and leave a voicemail about a position I applied for, I called them back within minutes and left a voicemail. I followed up with another call the next day and LinkedIn messaged the person. She never responded to me after reaching out to me first.
Few weeks later a different Selby Jennings recruiter reached out to me with another position, I went through the same steps and never heard back again after they reached out to me first. I thought this was weird so I reached out to their co-head of the Charlotte office asking if these were spam calls. She told me she reached out to both of the consultants that contacted me to get back to me and I never heard from them.
The whole situation was bizarre, seems like they just have young college grads dialing to hit a quota haha, nonetheless I’d advise companies against using any of the Charlotte Selby Jennings team, I have had much better and real conversations with other recruiting firms.
they just spam endlessly
