Shifting from IB as an associate to Miami PE
At a BB focused on energy/power/infra as an MBA associate. Had a shift in my family situation and seeking a relocation to South Florida. This does not have to be an immediate move and I have flexibility on timeline. I am open to staying in IB, but it does not look like there is a ton of IB in South Florida - correct me if I'm wrong, just what I did see is more LMM.
I'm open to PE but also cognizant that the more normal route is analyst to PE. I don't need to do a megafund. I'm fine going a little down market, obviously not going to do some chop shop but don't need prestige just for the sake of prestige. This is more for a family situation that I'd like to move.
Any input on the Miami market, either for IB or PE would be most appreciated. I know I Squared is in Miami as is HIG although I've anecdotally heard their culture can be a little rough. I know Citadel is down there and they have some energy infrastructure. Curious what's there, what headhunters people may have used, and if people have seen some make the jump at the associate level to PE.
Not to be immediately negative but are you post MBA associate in IB? If so can be tricky to lateral into PE at that point. I’m sure you’re qualified but sometimes it’s an age thing and what level you’d be coming in at. And the immediate question from PE firms is why you haven’t done it yet by X age. It’s big difference from pre MBA associate. But others might know more about this topic than me. And I’m sure there’s exceptions.
Yep understood that it's not the traditional route. I've seen it done albeit less common. One that I interned with ended up at EnCap, met someone else who did a couple years in IB post MBA and now is at Breakwall.
For me though the main problem that I'm trying to solve for is location for family reasons. Doesn't have to be PE although that seems like what South Florida has
Got it understood, yeah seems like you know how to navigate the situation and I'm sure will do well.
In terms Miami PE my two cents: HIG (buyout funds have industrials/infra adjacent, but also have dedicated infra fund), I Squared (infra), Aterian (do some industrials / infra adjacent), Boyne (think pretty generalist), Trivest (good LMM firm have done well), Avance (more business services), Redbird (more media not sure if aligned to your interest), White Wolf. Also Hivest. I think a couple I Squared spinouts recently. And probably a lot of other firms that have recently created "satellite" offices in Miami.
Also everything above is Miami proper. Obviously more names if you expand to all of South Florida (e.g. Hidden Harbor, Blue Sea).
Very informative. Thanks
Just go work for nextera
That did actually come to mind, just didn't realize that Juno Beach is pretty far from Miami, no? I thought it was like a suburb but didn't realize it's about a 2 hour drive. Not a terrible option if need be though. I did get an unsolicited inbound from one of their headhunters a while back.
