Well, for one, it isn’t just Kim “pulling” these hires in; the other partner in the firm who is going to almost certainly be running the day to day is the former head of Carlyle consumer and has a good rep on the street. But more generally, economics at mega funds suck compared to smaller startup funds if those funds can meet two basic criteria: (1) raising significant assets and (2) are willing to give carry. Kim has enormous raising + buzz generating potential, and they’re almost certainly giving these early hires significant carry. The financial delta versus being a relatively junior carry holder at permira is probably pretty significant. This is all aside from the fact that it’s pretty smart to pair someone with the brand reach of Kim with a smart investment team in the consumer space; the thesis makes a lot of sense at a fund level.
