Switching sector coverage in middle market

Hey everyone, I'm looking for guidance / would love to hear people's experience in switching sector coverage within middle market firms. I'm currently at a financial services-focused firm, but have been looking to move geographies for personal reasons where almost all the shops focus on industrials/business services (a few healthcare too but not really in my interest).

Does anyone have any experience making a sector switch like this?

Ah, the classic sector switcharoo in the middle market! It's like swinging from one vine to another in the financial jungle. Based on the most helpful WSO content, making a sector switch, especially within middle market firms, is indeed a path many have trodden, each with its unique set of challenges and opportunities.

First off, your interest in switching from financial services to industrials/business services (or even healthcare, though it's not your cup of tea) is quite a leap. But fear not! It's entirely feasible with the right strategy. Here's a bit of wisdom from the WSO jungle:

  1. Networking is Key: Just like finding the ripest bananas, the best opportunities often come from who you know. Start reaching out to contacts within your desired sector. Don't overlook alumni networks, LinkedIn connections, and even cold outreach to professionals working in the target sector. The goal is to get insights into the sector and potentially a foot in the door.

  2. Leverage Your Skills: While the sectors are different, many skills in finance are transferable. Highlight your analytical abilities, financial modeling, and deal experience. Tailor your resume and conversations to show how your current skills can benefit your desired sector.

  3. Educate Yourself: Start immersing yourself in the new sector. Read industry reports, follow market trends, and understand the key players and dynamics of the industrials/business services sector. This will not only help you during interviews but also ensure you're making a well-informed decision.

  4. Be Prepared to Explain Your Motivation: Moving geographies for personal reasons is understandable, but be ready to articulate why you're also switching sectors. Make it a compelling story about seeking new challenges, growth opportunities, or a long-standing interest in the sector.

  5. Consider an Interim Step: If a direct switch seems challenging, consider roles that might serve as a bridge. For example, a position that involves both financial services and industrials to some extent, or a role focused on M&A or advisory services where you can get exposed to multiple sectors.

Remember, patience and persistence are your allies in this journey. It might take time, but with a solid strategy, you can make the transition. Keep swinging through the networking vines, and you'll land in your desired sector eventually. Good luck!
