TAS --> IB/PE/Corp Dev

I am currently a manager in TAS and have received admission into UNC's online MBA program. My goal is to eventually obtain a position on the buy-side, either lower-middle market PE or even Corp Dev. I understand IB experience is pretty essential for these roles and wouldn't mind doing a stint in IB. My undergrad is from a non-target with very little to no presence in IB, PE, etc. Overall, I am trying to determine if an online MBA would actually help me achieve these goals. I understand no matter what, these types of roles are an uphill battle for someone in my position. I would also aggressively network through the UNC alumni and student network to help build connections in these areas. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, an MBA can indeed be a valuable stepping stone towards a career in Investment Banking (IB), Private Equity (PE), or Corporate Development (Corp Dev). However, it's important to note that the reputation and network of the MBA program can significantly impact your opportunities in these fields.

While an online MBA program like the one at UNC can provide you with the necessary theoretical knowledge, it might not offer the same networking opportunities or carry the same prestige as a traditional, full-time MBA program. That being said, UNC has a strong reputation and if you leverage the alumni network effectively, it could open doors for you.

In terms of gaining IB experience, it's often seen as a crucial step towards a career in PE or Corp Dev. This is because the skills you gain in IB - such as financial modeling, valuation, and deal experience - are highly valued in these roles.

Given your current position in TAS, you already have a solid foundation in financial analysis. An MBA could help you build upon this foundation and transition into IB, which could then pave the way for a role in PE or Corp Dev.

Remember, it's not just about the degree, but also about the skills you gain, the people you meet, and the experiences you have along the way. So, if you decide to pursue the online MBA, make sure to take full advantage of all the resources and opportunities it offers. Good luck!
