Utility of Search Fund Internships (for both parties)?
I'm having a little trouble wrapping my head around the utility of search fund internships-- the whole setup seems kinda silly to me. My understanding is that most are unpaid and involves the intern helping source (read: email blasts and coordinating with brokers) potential deals. Plus if this happens over summer break, it's generally unlikely that the deal closes within that 2-3 month window, so the intern might not even get any concrete "transaction experience". Is this actually a pipeline to IB/PE roles (or internships the following summer)? Frankly, I'm not entirely sure how much value the searcher gets here either-- training then trusting a freshman to execute seems like a stretch.
I inquire because I have a semi-acquisitive holdco (for all intents and purposes, a continuous search fund with no external investors) and I fancy the idea of helping some younger kids out at local colleges / being a springboard to good finance career, but I fail to see the value on either side.

This is coming from someone still in college so take it with a grain of salt but I see them as a pretty good during semester internship to leverage for freshman summer. In the actually learning aspect, the one I did in freshman year involved a decent amount of sub-vertical specific sector research that I was able to leverage and talk about in future interviews (especially because of my interest in tech IB). Some of the sourcing was cool too like going through conference lists similar to in cold call growth shops.
