Value of getting a CHFP for Healthcare GE/PE/IB recruiting?
Recently made a career goal switch and now feel like Healthcare GE is the promised land for me. I am a 2026 grad with a non-traditional role planned for this summer that I am assuming will leave me with a decent amount of time outside of work. Today I learned about the HFMA and their CHFP (Certified Healthcare Finance Professional) Certificate and the descriptions of both exam steps feel applicable to private capital roles. I am curious if any professionals have input on pursuing this certification.
Plan is to recruit for a local small office GE internship during the school year and then for a local (most likely) GE/PE/IB role for FT (all healthcare).
Any other comments / advice is appreciated as well.
P.S. - Apologies for no useful links; this is a new account.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, certifications like the CHFP (Certified Healthcare Finance Professional) can be valuable, but their utility depends on your specific career goals and the roles you're targeting. For healthcare-focused GE/PE/IB recruiting, here are some considerations:
Relevance to Healthcare Finance: The CHFP certification is tailored to healthcare finance, which could demonstrate your commitment to the industry and provide a foundational understanding of healthcare-specific financial concepts. This might be particularly appealing to firms with a strong focus on healthcare investments.
Differentiation in Recruiting: While certifications like the CFA or CPA are more universally recognized in finance, a CHFP could help you stand out in healthcare-specific roles, especially if you're targeting smaller or niche firms that value specialized knowledge.
Time and Opportunity Cost: Since you mentioned having time outside of work, pursuing the CHFP could be a productive use of that time. However, ensure it doesn't detract from other critical activities like networking, preparing for interviews, or gaining hands-on experience through internships.
Networking and Industry Insight: Beyond the certification itself, engaging with HFMA (the organization behind CHFP) could provide networking opportunities and deeper insights into the healthcare finance landscape, which could be beneficial for your career switch.
Alternative Certifications: Depending on your long-term goals, you might also consider certifications like the CFA, which has broader recognition in finance, or even exploring healthcare-specific MBA programs if you're looking for a more comprehensive pivot.
Your plan to recruit for a local GE internship during the school year and then transition to a GE/PE/IB role full-time is solid. Pairing this with a certification like the CHFP could enhance your profile, but make sure to balance it with practical experience and networking efforts. Good luck!

I’ve never heard of this and doubt anyone will give you any credit for it in an application process. It might be great learning, but that’s for you to personally decide.
Ok awesome thanks. Found lectures for the first module on youtube so I think I'll just take what I can get from those rather than committing to the entire certification.
Aware of HFMA, not CHFP. For HFMA, tends to be internal FinOps people at healthcare companies. Only know one person who has it and they pivoted to sales (in healthcare).
