What is the modeling intensity of your sector?
Hey folks.
Exploring some go to market strategies for a financial modeling startup that I've been building on the side and am probably moving to full time since the high speed train startup I joined hasn't really worked out.
My background is in infra investment and project finance - the modeling intensity is huge. Each deal is different so there's a lot to manage. I did a write up about about it on here a while back on WSO that you can find here if you're interested in the renewable energy space.
I'd be curious to hear about your sector. Here are a couple of questions that would be awesome to better understand:
- What sector do you cover?
- How complicated is the revenue/inputs side of things?
- Is the financing side of things pretty templated, or does that tend to be bespoke too?
- Do templates mostly work for you, or do you find yourself doing a lot of bespoke modeling?
- Until what career title do folks at your firm find themselves still managing the model (even if slightly engaged and reviewing associate work)?
- What do you find yourself spending a bunch of time on that could probably just be automated if it wasn't in Excel? Can be anything from managing inputs to finding errors to walking model updates from one point in time to another.
- Anything else you think is relevant.
Cheers!
