What to wear to a PE super day?

From what I've seen, most people do suit, and no tie. Without any additional information from the firm, what would you wear?

Believe it or not, I've gone through the last 1 year at my bank without any formal clothing, so I need to go out and buy everything. Any advice on BUDGET places I can quickly get a suit, shirt, pants, and shoes? (Not hiddious looking, just respective enough to get me in the door)

I'm in NYC btw

Hiya, random question but what colour and style should the tie be? Want to gift my boyfriend one because he'll go through the app process next year. Thanks!

Nice gift! I like a light non-navy blue or a somewhat dark red. No flashy patterns but a discrete bit of pattern is fine. I would go to a department store and ask them to help you find a business interview appropriate tie and get a receipt in case it's not his style, but a conservative looking blue/red are usually a safe bet.

don't wear a tie dude i've never worn one and received multiple offers. if you don't get an offer because of no tie do u really want to work there? go with suit no tie

This seems like an easy choice to me.

Suit + tie = safe & presentable. Get some nice basics like the other poster said from suit supply and it'll last you for whatever event might appear in future, and if you're in this line, there will very likely be some.

No suit + no tie = you risk coming off as not being serious to some interviewers based on their individual opinions. Why would you do this?

My general rule of thumb is:

Any traditional finance role banking, big PE, etc, go with Suit and Tie. Could lose the tie, but as everyone has said, better to be a little over dressed than under.

Smaller shops, less traditional places, non NYC, maybe non pure finance: Would probably still go suit, but could lose the tie, maybe you can get away with dress pants and button down, but again, suit no tie is to me, easier, requires less thought, and you know you'll look good.

Maybe tech/startup would be the most casual, wouldn't go suit, suit no tie is fine, maybe a little stiff, dress shirt/pants is probably the most appropriate, and might even be able to get away with jeans + button down, but should still have a collared shirt and a clean set of pants.

As far as suits go, it's pretty easy, indochino/suit supply etc if you have a couple of weeks. If you're desperate, go to honestly anyplace that sells a few hundred dollar suit, but most importantly, get it emergency tailored, most places can turn it around within a couple of days. I've worn $200 suits that look decent just because the fit is good. Fit outweighs most things, so if you're looking for a one and done suit for an interview, get something cheap and make sure it fits you well.

That's a good question and while I can't give a definitive answer, I'll give you an anecdotal point and my general thoughts. For MBA banking recruiting, they recommend all men shave for interviews. When I asked classmates about this, they basically said that it probably doesn't matter at a majority of places, btu there are a few stuffier places where MDs were brought up in the 70/80/90s and see all types of facial hair as unprofessional. I do think that perception has changed and I think well groomed facial hair is completely fine, but again, it's something that in order to maximize chances, you should probably do away with.

I'm at a point in my career where I never shave before interviews and if that is the determining factor, then I figure the cultural fit wouldn't be there anyways, btu I'm also not looking to work at a big bank nor am I early career, so I get that my POV is a luxury.

Long answer short, you should probably just shave. It might be fine if you don't, but if that was the only reason you got dinged, would you be upset?

I had two super days (UMM; offers at both) and wore a suit, no tie. I only saw other candidates at one of them, and they were all wearing a tie.

Some of my interviewers wore ties, and others didn’t.

At the end of the day, think you need to wear a suit — tie is optional.

In hindsight, I probably should have worn a tie, but if you are a good candidate and look presentable (in a suit), I don’t think it really matters that much (excluding particularly stuffy firms — i.e., Brookfield).

Just get a suit. You'll need it for weddings and other events eventually anyways. Honestly just hop into like a Macy's / Nordstroms and you can grab something cheaper, or there's always SuitSupply as others have mentioned (although quality and service there isn't as good as it used to be). For online, Spier & Mackay is a good entry level option for M2M that's at a reasonable price point.

What color suit is the best to get as someone’s first and only suit? I’ve heard navy and charcoal are popular but not sure which to spend the $$$ on.
