What’s the Coolest Place a Legit PE Firm is Based in North America?

I’m not talking about the usual suspects like NYC, Boston, or Chicago. I’m curious about private equity firms headquartered in unconventional but awesome locations—think places like Vail, CO or similar.

These are the kind of spots where you’d expect the quality of life to be off the charts, with great outdoor activities, lifestyle perks, and an overall chill vibe. But at the same time, the firms based there are legit players in the PE world—not just family offices or tiny shops.

Any suggestions? Would love to hear about firms in ski towns, mountain resorts, coastal hideaways, or other non-traditional cities that still have some serious PE credibility.

An airport hanger with a private jet in it in California. If you're in the right vertical, you will know who this is. It's basically a fund with 9 figures in AUM and 2 - 3 guys deploying it.

My weird story with them is as follows...

One time, we were looking to sell a minority equity position in a company we owned. One firm committed, and wanted us to find a coinvestor.

My cofounder at the time suggests we talk to a guy with a nickname that would be racist if I typed it out here, but kind of funny when the guy himself says it. The name sounds totally fake though and I was convinced my cofounder was fucking with me. There are also a bunch of things he tells me about the firm  that sound completely made up.

So we fly our team down to them, and the said investor introduces himself with the racist nickname. At this point, I'm still convinced the whole thing is still an elaborate prank.

Eventually the deal closes/goes through a few stages where obviously it's not a prank.

Super weird. There's even wackier stuff but I think it's too easy to figure out who the firm is if I type it all out lol
