What's The hype with Private Equity

Everyone is so obsessed and attracted to private equity I really don't get the hype. Can someone genuinely tell me. I was in a room filled with interns, analyst and a CFO and I swear 80% of students want to break into private equity. I personally I am in Asset management I believe there are so many opportunities here students now at days are not looking into

I too took some time to “get it”.

Basically people think it’s what banking was in the ‘80s - get rich, do cool deals.

It will continue until regulators get involved and prohibit some of the practices (perhaps when retail money starts to flow into the funds). Biggest thing that would kill it in the future is if private markets get “regulated” to having to provide daily / weekly fair value marks and LPs realise it’s just levered small/medium public equity (which is marked more often, just thin liquidity).
