When is the earliest I can reach out about lateral opportunities?

I am about to start in PE this summer at a blue chip fund. However it is in a new city and with COVID this situation strains my relationship. I would like to talk to headhunters and let them know I am open to laterals in specific geographies. How soon can I have this discussion? Thank you.

In my view, as long as you emphasize confidentiality, you can speak to the headhunters as soon as you'd like. Headhunters make money by placing you so in most cases, they will be happy to put you in the processes as long as your ask is reasonable.

Do not speak to the headhunter that represents your current firm - they cannot place you and it will lead to a difficult and awkward conversation. You can let the others know now and check in ~once a quarter.

Would be helpful to get more context. Won't you anyways be working from home until things are settled, i.e. for the next few months at the least?

Just be a bit careful...I can't see any way that you won't totally burn bridges with the fund you've joined if you leave within the first few months. Maybe the situation is such that you don't care about this, in which case you can ignore.
