In what way does spotting the business selling for 100x earnings in an industry averaging 7x earnings constitute a steal? Or is something else up here?

look at it on an ENI basis, not EPS
The real question is why are you paying attention to TTM P/E instead of forward P/E?
I've done some preliminary research and have narrowed this down to two variables.

I'm not sure if these comments are serious or not, but the company's normalized earnings are most likely significantly different. I have never looked at the company or really the industry, but it's normalized earnings very well may equate to an earnings multiple that is more inline with the industry. P/E ratios are often meaningless.
