Working for a Job Title

Would like to get people's thoughts on this. My work allows me to work closely with a number of our portfolio companies and for those that don't have dedicated finance functions, I can see myself working up to CFO-level responsibilities or at very least to a strategic finance capacity. If I were to be interested in jumping to the operating side, I'm inclined to believe that having the management teams bestow a title on me would be helpful in exit ops. These companies are cash strapped and I'm developing good relationships so I would think I can have their blessing and if I pull enough favors for the partners I think they'll be ok with it as long as it doesn't involve pay or equity (totally cool with me).

I believe the level of work I'm doing can actually back up the titles, especially if my references support me and one of the companies gets acquired. You think the titles would make executive search firms take me more seriously?
