Addressing a low GPA in REPE first year out of undergrad
So I'll be interviewing for an acquisitions role right out of undergrad at a top 20 REPE shop (think AEW, CBREGI, Oaktree...) through an MD connection soon. My worry is I have a 2.8 GPA from a semi-target undergraduate b-school. (1) I was wondering how important is undergrad GPA once landing a first round interview and (2) how to address my GPA should it come up in the interview (wasn't in my application and not on my resume). This is my dream position so I want to do everything I can show that I am more than my GPA says I am to land this job.
My response: I'll admit that I did not apply myself as much as I should have early on in college and that is the regret of my undergrad career. However, during my senior year, I believe I've found my true interest in real estate finance and my grades show it. My GPA specific to my finance major is a 3.15, and my major GPA in concert with my real estate specific courses is a 3.22. I made the dean's list my final semester in college while taking upper-level finance and RE courses and I've been in leadership positions within my fraternity and VP of the IFC for all four years I've been in college. I now understand the dedication it takes to be truly successful and I will work as hard as possible to make sure I'm never in a situation like this again.
What do you think?
CREGuy2019, sorry about the lack of response. Maybe one of these topics will help:
Hope that helps.
