Assuming you are talking about working in corporate real estate? I know a few guys who did this when I was a broker. They learned to find a good location, but they weren't as well versed in the finance and development side of things. Pay didn't seem great.
I've worked on a couple deals with land acq guys for huge tech firms (FB/Amazon/Microsoft) and my experience has been somewhat the opposite. Guys who know RE very well and a lot of them had absurd educations, like Harvard/Oxford/Cambridge types, so they must have been getting paid.
That's probably the cream of the crop though; I imagine things are a little different if you're picking out sites for Panda Express or something.
