Applied for Associate Role, but Asking if They’d Consider Senior Associate
I applied for an Associate role at a top owner/operator. I completed a modeling exam (and did well) and have spoken with someone on the hiring team and have a second round scheduled. However, I have almost 2 years more experience than what they are looking for based on the job posting (they want someone with 4 years experience and I have close to 6). Is it reasonable for me to ask if they’d consider me for a Senior Associate role?
At the risk of asking a dumb question, do they have a senior associate role? Does it pay more or come with any more responsibility?
They do have a senior associate role and I’d definitely assume it pays more. Although I don’t know how much more they typically pay.
Wait til(IF) you get the offer. Don't bring this up first.
My only concern is that I don’t want it to look like I am “re-trading” them. I also understand your point though because if they are at the point of making me an offer I have more leverage.
You're not, you have the experience. It won't hurt. I've had title negotiated once I got the offer. I know this is easier at smaller firms. I couldn't do it at my current firm, but they came up in comp.
Either bring it up on the initial call, or when(if) you get the offer. IF you get it make it clear you want to be considered an associate 2/3 then you have to kill it that year.
