Bellwether or Stockbridge - VP of asset management role
Hey everyone- currently an associate in equity AM at a BGO/Nuveen/TPG and found an opportunity at a few shops to jump to a VP role. I've narrowed my decision to Bellwether and Stockbridge and wanted to get everyone's take here on which firm is the better seat. This would be in the LA/SF offices (I'm agnostic) and comp is very similar, though Bellwether did offer a meaningful relocation bonus. I'm also aware that Bellwether is more of an asset manager than a typical REPE with an acq team, but they do have some high caliber clients.
Longterm I care about good branding/reputation and relevant connections, but also dealflow and am always eager to hone my skills.
Anyone have any insight to either of these companies and can give feedback on culture, reputation, etc.? I haven't dealt with either so kind of in the dark without ancedotes. Thank everyone!!
Using BGO/TPG interchangeably with Nuveen is crazy but if at the latter, go Stockbridge - Bellwether is subpar to say the least. If actually at BGO or TPG and not being pushed out, stay
Haha fair enough... why is Bellwether subpar exactly? I've known about Bellwether for awhile now and hear their name pop up regularly (they worked on a portfolio my previous company owned) but hadn't heard about Stockbridge until recently. Are they legit in the institl REPE world? Any insight on culture/reputation?
Stockbridge is solid. Bellwether is mainly managing Oaktree which is being fully absorbed by Brookfield. Stockbridge is a good firm, CVA is more institutional than SPB but both are good
Appreciate the feedback! I was told I'd be working on the CVA side so good to hear it's relatively buttoned up. Which do you think has the better reputation? I'm interested in outsider reputation as I'd like to ultimately start my own thing eventually and could use the signaling browning points
Bellwether has 40+ clients. Not mainly Oaktree
Bellwether works with top institutional clients (Oaktree, Apollo, Invesco, PIMCO, Rockwood, several others). Super fun place to work.
Hmm yeah but I'm essentially reporting to these groups. I already do that internally to fund management but can't imagine having to do that according to institutional standards as a 3rd party asset manager... but maybe I'm mis-reading the relationship/nature of work
What is the comp for the VP positions?
~350k all in
bump
Am very familiar if you want to connect about BW
As someone who knows people who worked at both, I'd go with Bellwether. Both people I knew at Stockbridge left at the VP level as it became very top-heavy/crowded and less platform growth. If this was 5-10 years ago, I prob would have gone with Stockbridge.
