Big 4 Tax - Real Estate Exit Plan

Hi All,

I narrowed down what I would like to pursue and the jobs that are currently available online that I would like your advise on applying for.

I have been working in the financial services group within a big 4 accounting firm and specialized in compliance and REIT due diligence for a real estate development/management company for the past 3.5 years. Ultimately, I would like to break into the REPE and am seeking advise on how to gain necessary real estate deals/transactions/mortgage/underwriting experience.

After doing some Google search, I came across a "Financial Analyst" position for a major real estate development company (Link to the Posting: https://g.co/kgs/9VedJn). The estimated salary is significantly less than what I am currently making, but if this experience is something that will be relevant to the required experience, I am willing to take the opportunity.

Could you please let me know what you all think about this job opening, and if there is any other entry level/experienced level jobs you think I would be able to apply for to gain the real estate deals/transactions/mortgage/underwriting experience?

Thank you so much for your input!

Are you against getting an MSRED or MBA? If not, I have seen several people use that to jump from Big 4 to various RE firms into an Associate role (where comp is pretty high). Otherwise, I have seen some jump from Big 4 to the big brokerages (CBRE, HFF/now JLL, I even think I saw someone on LinkedIn who jumped to Eastdil but do not know them personally). Otherwise, join ULI and/ or NAIOP and talk to people at the various events. That is your best bet rather than cold applying online.

If you want to avoid school, look into Eastdil, JLL, CBRE, NKF, and others depending on your market. You can look for Debt and Equity (abbreviated D/E) roles and pivot from there. Possibly even to a Debt Fund if you really like debt (it's interesting imo).

Thank you so much Marta! If I were to mup from Big 4 to Big Brokerage Firms (CBRE/JLL/Eastdil/NKF), what job positions would be suitable for my background (not Tax though) and having no real estate experience? Please let me know. Thank you again!

The job posting is also a home builder. They tend to pay less than most of CRE so take that into account. Also, if your end goal is REPE and considering your 3.5 years of big 4 experience the last thing you'll want to do is start as a financial analyst at a homebuilder. It’s really hard to believe anything Glassdoor advises because they don’t take into account that some companies pay above market, factor in experience, and some companies in real estate have odd titles for some jobs. It’s not apple to apples like it would be at a big 4 for comp/title. For example, I am on the development side for a large REIT and my offer was 20k higher on base than what Glassdoor was showing me.
