Breaking into Development from Real Estate IB
As a post-MBA associate working in REGAL at a top Real estate bank, how difficult would it be to make the switch into Real Estate Development?
Don't really have much development experience besides my REGAL work and an internship during business school as a Real estate development consultant.
Not difficult at all. Typically there are 2 paths to breaking into development. 1.) you have a real estate finance background or 2.) you have a construction/architecture/engineering background. For obvious reasons, focus on roles that are geared more towards finance/acquisitions.
I’m trying to break into RE and my endgame is development.
As a career switcher, would it be unwise to take an AM job with a big developer, learn a bit about that and try to (fairly quickly) lateral to development?
Switching careers from what industry? If you are coming from a finance background like banking, then it could be possible to break into development directly or get some type of acquisitions role first (although very tough in this environment). But if you come from an unrelated industry and your only option to break into real estate is real estate AM and you are set on doing real estate, then it is better than nothing. Front office roles in real estate are pretty dead now due to the economy, so wouldnt be a terrible idea to do AM until the market comes back
You’re willing to take the pay cut? For the most part, Development bonuses at the junior level are well below that of REPE / REIB.
Yea man, the IB lifestyle is tough, especially with a family now
