CCIM Real Estate Development Specialization

I was looking around at the CCIM website and noticed that they recently created a "development" specialty track for designees. Anybody have any experience with this? Would it be worth pursuing in lieu of an MRED?

Just my $0.02 I do not think this could replace an MRED. Not to say it's useless, but not on the same level.

Yes and no. I am a CCIM, and currently earning my MSRE degree through Georgetown. Georgetown's program has a set of fundamental courses you have to take before electives. Right now I am in the Finance fundamentals course, and am finding that I know most of the material from earning the CCIM designation. It truly is a very high quality real estate education.

That being said, it definitely does not have the same effect on job prospects that a master's degree will. The master's degree is a little more thorough, as well. If you are an investor looking to become a highly knowledgeable real estate practitioner, I highly recommend CCIM. It's no-nonsense, and more affordable. If you are a real estate professional (and not a broker) looking to build a career, I recommend the master's degree.

All depends on what you want to do long-term. Designations are probably not going to help you as much as a masters degree is, unless you're trying to differentiate yourself from other job candidates who have masters degrees. Part of it is luck, too, since some employers are going to be more impressed by the master's degree than the CCIM designation and vice versa. MonopolyMoney is right about needing 3-5 years of work experience in order to get the CCIM designation, but you can get the classes out of the way in the meantime and put those on your resume.
