CRE Overtime Activities

I have been working overtime (60+ hours a week), for the past couple weeks. With not a lot of extra time and no particular hobbies, I wanted to create a post for those that work longer than normal hours. What is your routine? As someone just getting into this routine, I find it hard to stay motivated and on a schedule. I work as an analyst at a large AM firm in a top tier CRE market.

Starting my day, I wake up at 6:30am and hit the gym by 7. Dedicating no more than an hour, I'm done by 8 to start getting ready for work. Shower, grab a breakfast bar and protein shake, I'm off to work. Normally arrive at work about 9 or a few minutes later. I have a short lunch most days while I eat at my desk. Around 7-7:30pm, I get off to head home. Most nights I make a quick meal and check my email before I go on a run. I try and get a couple miles in before getting back at around 9. Shower, catch up on the news I missed from the day, check my emails, and then head to bed around 11:30.

Do you find it takes you a while to wind down after your run at night? I've been toying with the idea of some evening exercise. I get up at 630, read for 20-30mins, as I'm physically useless that soon after arising, do some light yoga, run for 20 mins, breakfast and off to work. I try and do some weights during the day at the work gym 2-4 times per week; it helps get me invigorated for the afternoon/early evening work.

I drink a black coffee around 4 and 5 at the latest. Normally ride the caffeine till I get off and the food energizes me. Going for a run feels great as I am normally in the office all day. The warm shower knocks off the edge from the run and reading puts me out. I agree though that weights are definitely hard in the morning. I like to stretch for half of my workout then hit it hard once my blood starts flowing.

I try and get up a little earlier than that to accomplish a lot of the same things; helps me stay in control of the day to be in the saddle a little earlier and then get out a little earlier.

Try setting up more coffee or lunch meetings 15-30 minutes here and hour there makes a difference. It breaks up the day, gives you something to look forward to, and keeps you plugged into the market. If you're in a major market it should be pretty easy to do.

I rotate the days I work out. Usually i aim to work-out 3-4 days a week. If my GF sleeps over, I might not workout or workout when I get home and deal with the crowds. Otherwise, I'll work out in the morning. My hours are better than yours but I'll lay my schedule out normally if I work out in the morning:

5:45 - Wake 6:10 - Gym 7:10 - Make lunch, eat breakfast, shower 8 - 8:25 - Get to work 5:00 to (6:00-7:00) - Leave work 7:00 - 12:00 - Read, study GMAT, make dinner, run errands, learn coding, side hustle stuff 12:00-12:30 - Bed

  • 5:30: Wake Up

  • 6:00: Decide whether to go to the gym or be lazy and browse the internet. 50/50

  • 7:00: Either showering post-gym or already out the door

  • 7:30/8:00 to anywhere from 5:30 to 9:30: Work

  • Anywhere from 5:30 to 9:30 to anywhere from 10 to 12: Cook, eat, go to the driving range, play video games, watch something, go grab drinks, etc.

"Don Johnson" Do you wear shorts on the driving range ;) lmao

Definitely, my man. When it's 90+ out, I don't golf in pants. I'm not getting paid like a pro.

My schedule has changed a lot since I've moved to the new job (I'm only in the office 40 hours a week now), but at my old place I was consistently working 60+ hour weeks. When I was putting in those kind of hours my schedule looked like this:

7:00am wake-up/hit gym 2-3x a week (there was one in my building) 8:15am shower/get ready for work 9:30am in office 9:30pm/10pm home (If it was Friday, I always left at 6pm; just a personal rule). 11:30/midnight sleep

Also, I don't work Saturdays, that is another rule of mine. But I worked a lot of Sundays...

On that commuting grind trying to save some $$$. Fairly regimented schedule (wish there were more hours in the day...) I work at a larger investment manager in a major market.

4:45 Wake up, coffee 5:15 Start commute 6:45 Get to gym (near work) 7-8:15/8:45 Work out 8:30-9 Get into office 7 (on a lighter night) Back to gym 8-9pm (normal nights) leave work, start commute home 10:00-11:30 pm Set out gym clothes for next day, get to bed

Will try to get 3-4 long cardio sessions in per week with 1-2 lifts per week. Schedule isn't nice but getting fat sucks.

7:00 Wake up, coffee/read 7:30 Shower 8:15-8:30 Get to work 11:30 Lunch at my desk 1:30 Quick 30-45 minute workout to break up the day 6:00-7:00 Work 7:00-on Commute home, dinner, anything else I feel like doing

6:30 Wakeup, shower, get ready 7:10 Walk to train and ride to work 8:00 arrive at work, grab coffee and a bite to eat

12:00-1:30 Workout during lunch, eat at desk after

6:00-7:30 usually leave work in this range, occasionally later and almost always earlier on Fridays. Will generally eat dinner at work if it's after 7.

After work I'll usually have a rec sports game of some sort depending on the season, go to a bar for trivia or to play pool or darts, or just go home and watch tv or read. Working out mid-day and eating at work if it's a late one are huge in freeing up my nights.
