Debt brokerage / cap markets ?

How lucrative is a career in debt brokerage / cap markets ? Considering leaving a debt fund for it. How competitive is the space? Everyone on the principal side of the business loves to shit on brokers, but would love to hear accurate and real insight.

I always believed that the principal/ownership side of the business was the end all be all goal. While I have been actively searching for a new role I have spoken to many successful brokers and I am in the process of interviewing at 2 brokerage shops (CBRE, JLL) both on their investment sales teams. It seems like the top guys make an absolute killing and sometimes have the opportunities to participate in deals due to their relationships with owners/principals. Also, culture seems great! As someone who once never considered brokerage, I have come around and think highly of it now. Would love to hear more insight from other members as well.
