Developers of WSO - Advice for Neighborhood/City Meetings
I'm flirting with transitioning over to the development side of real estate, which was always something that I wanted to do. One critical part of the job that is completely foreign to me is presenting a development to a neighborhood group or city council. For the developers on this forum, what are some tips or pieces of advice that you have for people presenting a project in a public forum?
I've done about 2,500 units + ~5M sqft in industrial developments and 95% of the public meetings my land use attorney and CM/architect (for technical questions) do the talking. That's a big part of what local land use attorneys are paid for.
This plus do everything you can to know the outcome ahead of time. Meet with planning and zoning people. Meet with city council. Address their concerns ahead of time and go in with 90%+ certainty you'll get approval.
Yea that touches on a better answer. The developers work happens much more before the fact. When it comes to the actual planing/community board meeting, that's other peoples time to shine. If the developer is speaking more often than not its because something is going sideways.
